For the Spring 2026 edition of Solutions Magazine, journalist Franc Coenen visited KMWE to examine how two internal PhD trajectories strengthen our strategy for smart manufacturing. Rather than pursuing a fully autonomous “dark factory”, we are building a data-driven production environment in which automation, AI agents and human expertise reinforce each other.
Research as strategic accelerator
The PhD research of Nitish Singh (AI agents and data platforms) and Koen Herpss (automation concepts and AGVs) forms the strategic backbone of KMWE’s digital transformation. Their work translates directly into decisions on data architecture, automation strategy and shop floor design.
AI agents in practice
AI agents already support our CAM engineers. A developed agent scans tool lists, verifies parameters and detects anomalies — preventing production errors before they occur.
AI does not replace engineers; it strengthens them. But without structured, high-quality data, AI cannot scale.
Data infrastructure first
Over the past five years, KMWE has developed its own software platform that connects ERP, PLM, tool management, quality systems and CNC machine data into one integrated environment.
In a high mix, high complexity production setting, harmonising different machine data models and standards remains a major challenge. Smart manufacturing starts with data quality, integration and standardisation — not with algorithms.
Automation with human oversight
Research into centralised versus decentralised tool storage shows that a hybrid model currently offers the best balance between efficiency and risk.
In our environment, full autonomy is neither realistic nor desirable. We are building a highly automated “lights on factory” where technology supports decision-making and people remain in the loop.
